The month of Ramadan is one of the most important months of the Islamic calendar. It is the month of dedicating ourselves to the worship of Allah. This is done through fasting in the daytime, praying in the nighttime and being extra generous by giving and sharing what we have of food and money.
Although young children may not be able to fully participate in these acts of worship, it is important to teach them about the significance of this month and what it means to a Muslim. It's also important to start training them from a young age by encouraging them to fast a part of the day, pray additional prayers and recite more Qur'an than they usually do.
Also, an important aspect of Ramadan which we should focus on with children is the behavioral aspect by teaching them the significance of placing extra emphasis on self-discipline during Ramadan. That is the very objective behind fasting this month, as Allah says:
"O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you-as it was for those before you-so perhaps you will become conscious [of Allah]." [Al-Baqarah 2:183]
The Prophet said, "If one does not give up lies and false conduct, Allah has no need that he should give up his food and drink." [Bukhari (1903)]
The month of Ramadan is an opportunity like no other to improve our relationship with Allah, build our overall character and transform our lives. Our children should not miss out on experiencing such a golden opportunity.
The point is that our children should feel a special attachment to this month like no other, such that when the month is over, they feel like a special guest has just bid them farewell and look forward to the next time it arrives.
May Allah accept our fasting, prayers and all our other good deeds in this month.
